UNIS AND HIS HILL, HALABJA: 250m from the outskirts of the village of Shiramair in Halabja district is a hill with a minefield. Its surroundings are in intensive use, but Grdiunis – the hill of Unis - is neither ploughed nor used. The landowner, Unis (inset), had two accidents there in the late ‘90s – losing his left leg in 1991 and the replacement prosthetic limb for the same leg in 1996. In 2009 his son was ploughing nearby and detonated a landmine underneath his tractor. 4 livestock have been killed by landmines on this site, representing a serious loss of resources for this rural village of 85 families who still live with landmines, 19 years after the last major conflict in the Iraqi Kurdistan region
