WORK IN PROGRESS /YALLANPE VILLAGE, HALABJA
YALLANPE VILLAGE, HALABJA: This rural village of 10 families close to the Iranian border is a close knit community, to which the loss of livestock to landmines has a significant impact on their food security. NPA cleared the land around to the rear of this photograph, only 350 metres from inhabited buildings, freeing up pasture land. On the day of this visit there were over fifty sheep and a shepherd enjoying safe grazing in the same area where previously one human and multiple livestock accidents had stricken the villagers in fear. Yet the surrounding land as close as 500m from the village still has hidden hazards of landmines and UXO, preventing grazing, cultivation, and children playing. MIR plans to continue work here until the threat is gone.
